Dr. Mary Newport has been married to Steve Newport since 1972. She is a doctor practicing neonatology in Florida since 1983 and was founding medical director for two newborn intensive care units in the Tampa Bay area.     She wrote an book, “What If There Was a Cure for Alzheimer’s Disease and No One Knew?” relaying her research into a dietary intervention that produces mild ketosis that may benefit persons with Alzheimer’s and other neuro-degenerative diseases.
Currently, and because of Dr. Mary, research has started at the University of South Florida (USF) Byrd Alzheimer Institute, where humane animal studies are in progress and a clinical trial of coconut oil in people with mild cognitive impairment.
On Dr. Mary Newport's site, she reports that "Ketones as an alternative fuel are also being studied at USF for treatment of cancer, ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), wound healing, oxygen toxicity, epilepsy, and status epilepticus, using ketogenic diets that contain medium chain triglycerides and also ketone esters. While the results of these studies will take some time, for now you can provide ketones to the brain as an alternative fuel by consuming foods that contain medium chain triglycerides to produce ketones." One of those medium chain triglycerides is coconut oil.
The most recent research states: A ketone ester diet exhibts anxiolytic and cognition-sparing properties, and lessens amyloid and tau pathologies in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.  This is more exciting news for those who have or are developing cognitive dysfunction.  Reports say that the earlier this treatment begins, the better the results seem to be.
