Arthritis Help UPDATED

Joint pain can be the result of many different diseases and viruses.  Arthritis is inflammation of the joints and there are many forms of arthritis which often can cause disability.
Symptoms may include pain, swelling and joint stiffness. Conventional treatment options usually include physical therapy, exercise, weight control, orthopedic help, medication and surgery.
Inflammation is part of the body's immune response. Its job is to remove harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, free radicals, irritants, or pathogens. Chronic or long-term inflammation is dangerous to the body and can result from:
  • Failure to eliminate whatever was causing an acute inflammation
  • An autoimmune response to a self antigen - the immune system attacks healthy tissue, mistaking it for harmful pathogens.
  • A chronic irritant of low intensity that persists
There are many conditions and diseases which are as a result of chronic inflammation. (i.e. arthritis, asthma, ulcers, TB, Crohns, and more).

Today, new unconventional treatments include: boswellia serrata (frankincense) and commiphora molmol (myrrh). Research on the efficacy was published in PubMed entitled: Efficacy and tolerability of Boswellia serrata extract in treatment of osteoarthritis of knee--a randomized double blind placebo controlled trial. Both of these extracts can be found as an essential oil that can be rubbed on the area of pain. For information on myrrh, see WebMd

Arnica also reduces swelling and pain of bruises, sprains, muscle and joint problems, and insect bites.

Another suggestion is: Genacol. Now this product I have never used myself.  The reason I like it, however, is because of a survey I did at my local health food store.  I was told that it was their Number One selling product. This seems to be a product that people like.

Their website states: Genacol is a molecular-enhanced Bio-Active Collagen Complex formula which contains crucial structural proteins that our body requires to repair and rejuvenate itself; structural proteins not found in Glucosamine and Chondroitin.  By using the complete collagen molecule in Genacol, you get 100% of the protein chain required to help restore joint mobility and reduce overall pain and joint discomfort.

Also I like turmeric. It is an ancient yellow spice and is a part of the ginger family which possesses an active ingredient called curcumin. Curcumin has been used for a number of diseases which include: arthritis, allergies, Alzheimer's, cancer, and diabetes.  You can purchase it at Vitacost in pill form.

Lastly, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of honey in a glass of distilled water and drink this solution 3 times a day is also said to be a great help for arthritis.

Hopefully, this list gives you some new ideas to help with inflammation, now that the seasons are changing once again.

UPDATE:  Another option  is DMSO in gel form or Soothanol X2 which has DMSO in it.  DMSO can be used topically to decrease pain and speed the healing of wounds, burns, scares and muscle and skeletal injuries.   WebMD says that it can be used topically to treat headaches, inflammation, osteoarthritis and arthritis. It may also help amyloidosis, eye conditions, bunions and fungus.  *Please see safety concerns and consult a physician before use.
